A federal jury in Miami has awarded the state of Florida $1.9 million in a federal criminal fine for selling a counterfeit drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
A jury in Florida ordered the Food and Drug Administration and the U. S. Postal Service, which runs the postal system, to pay for a $4.6 million fine imposed by the federal government in the case of Viagra, the manufacturer of the medication.
“The defendants were harmed when their medication, Viagra, was sold illegally, and it was provided to the victims by the Postal Service,” said Steven B. Lechleiter, the U. Attorney in the District of Florida. “Viagra is a serious drug for the people of Florida, and we hold the United States and Florida alike responsible for the consequences that result.”
The price of Viagra was so high that it was reported to be worth $9,849,000 or nearly $1,100,000 in the United States. The pills were advertised in a medical journal that claimed they help men with erectile dysfunction get and keep an erection. They were also advertised in print and in drug advertisements.
